Following Stereotypes

Throughout this episode, there were a few times when the characters were following gender stereotypes. One occurrence is when lip gets a job as a mechanic working on motorcycles, this is a stereotypical job for men. Another stereotype is that Debbie thinks that she is becoming a lesbian, so she dresses more masculine to “fit the part” of a lesbian” she also says that her girlfriend is very masculine so there is not much of a difference dating her versus a man. Karl is going to Westpoint, which is pretty typical of young men, there is not a lot of media coverage of women going to Westpoint. Karl also goes to a former soldier to get insight on how to kill people. The last scene is when Kevin and V are talking about going into other bars to see how “rapey” they are and V is wearing a revealing outfit and Kevin says that women should be able to look “as slutty as they want” without being looked at or groped by men. It is stereotypical that women are used as eye candy and men would never go into a bar and make sure it is safe for men to go in there without being looked at or groped.

Not Following Stereotypes

At the beginning of the episode, Fiona’s boyfriend says that she should vote for the woman running for Congress because she should support other women. Fiona says that she doesn’t agree with what that Congresswoman stands for so she isn’t going to vote. Women shouldn’t vote for other women just because they are women and Fiona recognized that.

Bechdel Test

The first Bechdel test I did is when Debbie and her girlfriend Alex are at breakfast and they are talking about work again. This scene passed the Bechdel test. The second Bechdel test is Debbie and Alex again, they are in bed and Debbie is talking about her ex-boyfriends and comparing those relationships with the one she has now with her girlfriend. This scene does not pass the Bechdel test. The last Bechdel test is again Debbie and Alex the next morning and they are talking about breakfast, this conversation was short, but passes the Bechdel test.
