Following Stereotypes

When Tami’s family finds out that she is pregnant they go to Lip’s work and threaten him. They tell him that it is her decision with what she does with the baby. Usually, women support other women when dealing with choices about their bodies and they make sure the men know that nothing is up to them.

Not Following Stereotypes

Kevin has recently gotten a vasectomy and it is the hottest day of the year. The power goes out and Kevin starts to freak out because he won’t have ice. He complains about the pain a lot which big tough men like Kevin usually do not do. Men are stereotypically portrayed to handle pain which Kevin is not doing very well.

When Lip finds out that Tami is pregnant he wants to be involved. This idea scared Tami because she thought he would just leave and not be involved. Men on the southside of Chicago who are poor and young do not tend to stick around to watch and support their child. Lip wants to be a part of the baby’s life, but Tami is not sure how to process the support.

Fiona finds out that the north side of Chicago got their power back on before the southside did. She rallies up the southside to protest about the inequalities.  Women are not portrayed as leaders or people who want to start a movement to get what they want. Being a leader is a masculine quality. The people ended up listening to Fiona until they got about halfway to the north side and the power on the southside turned back on. Everyone wanted to just turn around and forget about it, but Fiona wanted to still protest about the inequality, but no one listened to her and she was left alone.

Carl is still jealous that Kelly is favoring Debbie over Carl. He confronts her about it because he wants to be on the same page as her. Kelly is sick of Carl being clingy and overthinking situations that mean nothing. Kelly calls him needy. Stereotypically the woman in the relationship is the clingy and needy one.
