In this episode of Grey’s Anatomy, Christina Yang becomes frustrated when her boyfriend, Preston Burke, becomes lethargic and glum during his recovery from surgery.
Throughout the episode, Christina is shown as being assertive and decisive when pushing Burke to not give up and continue to exercise his arm so that he can regain his strength. In this way, she is showing stereotypical masculine traits. By helping him, she is also showing her compassionate and caring side, which indicates that she also has stereotypical feminine traits. The message this episode seems to send is that just because women are caring and compassionate, that doesn’t mean they should be expected to be meek and subordinate around me.
In class we learned about gendered genres, and how some genres are targeted towards women. Given that this show’s main character is female, and that the storylines primarily involve romance, I think it can be said that this show is targeted towards women because women are expected to enjoy romance shows and movies.
