In this episode of Grey’s Anatomy, Christina Yang attends a mortality and morbidity conference at work. She also worries about her boyfriend Preston Burke, who has returned to work following surgery, despite still having hand tremors.

Though Christina does not have much of a role in this episode, there are still two scenes where she breaks gender stereotypes. First, early in the episode she is seen bringing snacks to the mortality and morbidity conference and acting like it will be a fun time, despite it being a conference where patient deaths will be discussed. Sensitivity is a stereotypically feminine trait, so by her displaying insensitivity in the situation she is breaking gender stereotypes. Later in the episode, she shows confidence and a willingness to take risks by doing part of Preston’s surgery for him when his hand starts shaking, despite the fact that she is only an inexperienced intern.

In class, we recently learned about representation in behind the scenes roles in media. Grey’s Anatomy’s showrunner is Shonda Rhimes. Having a woman in charge of the show is probably why this show has prominent female characters and has great representations of women.
