Reinforcing and Resisting Male Stereotype
Cliff goes against the wishes of Anna and Pearl to get revenge to try and take over Mystic Falls, especially towards the Salvatore brothers. Cliff is a prime example of toxic masculinity and using violence and aggression to try and get what he wants.
Damon is protective over Elena and doesn’t let her get into any trouble when having to save Stefan. Damon’s compassionate side towards Elena and being very gentle and caring with her showcases how he resists the male stereotype of always having to withhold from showcasing his emotions.
Reinforcing and Resisting Female Stereotype
Elena calls Damon “a psychopath with no redeeming qualities” when standing up to him in an angry state. Elena resists the female stereotype of holding back in an argument with a man, and. shows that women can have control and hold the power.
Jeremy flirts with and Anna and makes her believe he wants to be with her, making Anna become more infatuated with Jeremy. Anna’s emotions get the best of her and she is almost manipulated into turning him – showcasing how she reinforces the idea that women let their emotions dictate their decisions.
