In this 2020 issue of Sports Illustrated, NFL quarterback Russell Wilson is presented on the cover using two techniques to portray a stereotypical male using the sex role perspective.

A Sex Role Perspective
  1. Active Role
    • Like many other men, Wilson continues to follow this consistent pattern of eye contact. With this, he is able to play an active and engaging role with the audience that represents his toughness, strength, and power. These are just a few of the characteristics that are commonly associated with male figures.
  2. The Vitruvian Man
    • In this image, Wilson is used in an act of symbolism. He is portrayed as the Vitruvian Man, a drawing made by Leonardo da Vinci in about the 1490s that represents the ideal proportions of a human. By showing Wilson in this way, it gives the impression that males are the ideal image of a human being. It supports the stereotype that men are superior individuals and reinforces the idea that this is the way to become successful.
