Examples of Masculine Personality Traits Exhibited by Macy Vaughn:
- Analytical: When Macy reveals Maggie’s true parentage to her sisters, she prefers to look at it from an investigative perspective, rather than an emotional standpoint, saying, “This could be a huge clue that could help illuminate why Mom did things the way she did. Just look on the bright side!” This causes Mel to even say, “Stop trying to control our reactions, Macy! We’re not data for you to arrange!”
- Leadership ability/independent: Macy takes it upon herself to use a spell to find all of Marisol’s hidden secrets in the house, and discovers letters of correspondence between her father and her mother that go back decades.
- Willing to take a stand: Macy, along with Mel, Maggie, and Galvin, vanquish the demon taking control of the souls at Maggie’s acapella concert, saving the dozens of people there.
Examples of Feminine Personality Traits Exhibited by Macy Vaughn:
- Sensitive to others’ needs/compassionate: Macy refuses to leave Galvin’s side when he’s under the effects of the demonic song.
- Apologetic/eager to soothe hurt feelings: Macy feels bad about how she delivered the news about Dexter being Maggie’s father to her sisters, and wants to mend their rift, which she does at the end of the episode.
- Warm/childlike: When sharing their parents’ letters with Maggie, Macy shows a lighter, more vulnerable side, bonding with her sister in a new way.
Conclusion: Macy struggles with how she dealt with the parental “bombshell,” clearly still unaccustomed to dealing with more “emotional” situations, returning to what she knows as a scientist for comfort. However, she strives to mend her relationship with Mel and Maggie throughout the episode, giving them space to process, and leaning more on Galvin for support. As she shares the letters with Maggie at the end, Macy seems softer and lighter in a way the audience hasn’t seen before. However, this only makes the ending of the episode more tragic, as it is revealed through the letters that Macy actually died as a baby, and Dexter and Marisol resurrected her through magical means. This reveal will clearly have a huge impact on her as the show goes forward.
