This episode passes the Bechdel Test in the very beginning of the episode. Walt and Skylar are attending the birthday party of Walt’s old research partner and friend, Elliot. As they are exchanging their hellos, Elliot’s wife notices Skylar’s baby bump, and they begin talking about her pregnancy and how far along she is. Skylar begins to beam at the mention of her pregnancy, and shares that she and Walt had recently found out they were expecting a girl. Although they had this conversation in the presence of their husbands, the two women were able to engage in a conversation about a topic not revolving their spouses. Skylar’s femines trait of maternity, and compassion are definitely shown in this scene, as she talks about her expectant baby girl. She is beaming with excitement. If not for this scene, however, the episode would fail. The main topic of this episode is about Elliot offering to pay for Walter’s cancer treatment, and him refusing. Skylar engages in conversation with other women when discussing the issues and confusion as to why her husband won’t accept the free treatments. Elliot is portrayed as a character with masculine traits such as competitiveness and assertiveness, by trying to make it seem he has money to help out Walter, but Walter is also shown as competitive by not accepting Elliot’s offer because he wants to make it seem like he doesn’t need the help of somebody else to pay for his cancer treatments.
