Rick O’Connell is the lead male protagonist in the Mummy. His first scene is a battle between himself and the, initial enemies and eventual allies, Medjai. We see him in charge of his group of soldiers. He looks calm in the face of a battle, but a few moments later we see him screaming at another soldier as they sprint towards a hiding place to escape the battle they are clearly losing. After losing his weapons, Rick is cornered by the Medjai, who aim their weapons at him. Rick closes his eyes and waits for the final blow which obviously never comes. The Medjai are scared off by the face of the Mummy appearing in the sands. Rick also runs away when the sand begins to kick itself up around him.

In his first initial introduction, Rick O’Connell does not support gender stereotypes, because even though he is in a position of power we see him yelling and running in fear. Rick shows his emotions clearly and doesn’t hide any of them, even the typically weak appearing ones. His fear of the situation at hand is shown in his actions and on his face. He closes his eyes when he believes he’s about to die, a trait often only given to men that are meant to look weak.
