In this episode of Breaking Bad, Skyler and Marie pass the Bechdel Test. Skyler, Hank, their son Hank J.R., Marie, and her husband Hank are all sitting outside having a backyard barbeque. The two couples begin to reminisce about how they met and how the husbands were able to get the two wives to date them. When Walt starts to talk about how he and Skyler met, Skyler gets really emotional and starts to cry, because the memories made her sad, knowing her husband has been diagnosed with severe lung cancer and he doesn’t know much time he has left. However, Walt had sworn Skyler to secrecy and made her promise not to tell anybody else, so when she starts to cry, nobody knows why, except for Walt. Everyone tries to console Skyler as she is crying, but the only person who could make her feel better in the situation was her sister Marie. Their conversation doesn’t involve any men, just Skyler’s emotions and Marie adopts the feminine trait of nurturing, and also empathy, as she is trying to calm down her sister and figure out what’s wrong. This passes the Bechdel test because not only were both sisters in the episode but for once they were able to have a conversation without either of their husbands being brought up.
