Season 2 Episode 9
Summary:
Ilana and Abbi get a job for the night working with coat check. She leaves to go to the bathroom and runs into a stunning woman. She leaves to pretend to be a caterer in hopes of finding her. Abbi is stuck at the coatcheck, but Ilana forgot how a coat check works and messes up the whole process. Abbi is alone with a lot of angry guests who want their coats back.
Masculine Traits:
-
Aggressive:
- At the coat check, Abbi says“Who has a Chanel jacket?…. That was a trick question. Do not play me, not today!”. She was overwhelmed with everyone and all alone, so she stood her ground.
- Abbi pulls out a fake gun to threaten someone to give them Kelly Rippa’s coat. She did this knowing it wouldn’t go off, and after instilling fear, she got the coat.
- Assertive: Ilana is determined to find the beautiful girl from the bathroom. Once they find each other, Ilana kisses her right away. Women aren’t seen engaging in this behavior in the media.
- Analytical: Abbi tries to track down people from the coat check and brings them the proper coats in an attempt to get Kelly’s coat. This means a lot to her, so she tries to think about what coats were left, who took what, and where they went after.
Femimine Traits:
- Kelly Rippa comes to get her coat, and Abbi freaks out as she is a fan. The coat isn’t found, but Abbi guarantees her that she’ll find the coat.
- When Abbi finds the coat, she goes to Kelly’s and tries to impress her. She dresses very nice and complements her home.
Queer Representation:
Ilana leaves the bathroom and sees a woman who is stunning and there is a dramatic pan between the two of them. She tells Abbi that this woman is the most beautiful girl she’s ever seen. Ilana’s sexuality is never labeled or very clear, but she does go into a little detail in this episode. She says, “I have sex with people who look different than me. Different colors, different shapes, different sizes. People who are hotter. People who are uglier. People who are more smart, not more smart. Innies, outies, I don’t know – a Catholic person”.
Sex Role Perspective:
This episode highlights what it means to be a woman. Women can be attracted to who they want and don’t have to disclose it to anyone. The setting of this episode takes place at a party where two women aren’t attending, but rather working. Several masculine traits were present and feminine ones resisted.
