Amelia Bechdel Test: passes

This episode is focused on the doctors dealing with the trauma and aftermath of their own plane crash as they have to help victims of a recent plane crash. In this episode, Amelia’s interactions are with Owen, Stephanie, and the female patient that she is working on. Amelia has interaction with Stephanie as they determine what to do with the female patient, which allowed this episode to pass the Bechdel test. Even though Amelia was sympathetic, eager to soothe hurt feelings, cheerful, which are signs of feminine traits they’re are overcome with her masculine traits which were competitive, being independent, being forceful, and dominant that is seen in this episode.

  • Amelia is cheerful later in the episode as she proclaims the good news of her patient to Owen as he was also on the case.
  • Amelia is seen at the end of this episode talking to Owen as she is eager to soothe hurt feelings, as she wants the fighting to be over along with the resentment she holds. As she even tells him that, “I’m sorry If I hurt your feelings”.

      • In the first Interaction, she has as she is left alone when she is seen as more fragile and stunned from the situation which is seen as more feminine.

Masculine

  • Amelia is seen as independent in the first scene she’s in as she is talking with Owen. She knows that at this point she’s not mentally prepared for a relationship as she tells him so they can both be on the same track.
  • Amelia is seen as forceful in this episode as she goes off at her coworker who continues to push the patient too far in the hope that the patient will remember what happened in the plane crash.
    • This is shown when she reprimands the intern for taking the patient out of bed for another experiment to see if the patient can regain her memory.
  • Amelia is dominant in this episode as she gives her belief on what the diagnosis will be even though Owen insinuates that she might have missed something.
  • Amelia becomes aggressive as she talks to Owen for the second time when they bump heads. As it is clear to see they’re both angry at each other but trying to be civil with each other which ultimately fails.
    • This is seen again when Amelia and Owen are fighting over an intern as they both raise their voices and feed up with each other.
      • Body lunge & Dress:
    • Most of the time in this episode Amelia is shown having good posture showing that she has power and is not seen as someone who should be messed with.
