Amelia Bechdel Test: Fails

This episode Fails as Amelia’s interactions in this episode are with Owen, his mother, and John. Even though Amelia has a scene with just Owen’s mom they’re talking about the man who the mother is dating, which makes this episode fails. Based on Amelia’s body language and actions in this episode she is seen as equally masculine and feminine. Amelia is seen as being understanding, sensitive to others’ needs, and sympathetic which are signs of feminine traits they’re are matched with her masculine traits which were ambition, assertiveness, and being self-reliant in this episode.

 Sex Role Analysis

Feminine 

  • Amelia is seen as being understanding to other people’s needs as she tries to help Owen come to understand his mother’s relationship with someone who is quite younger than her. She takes time to make sure Owen is taken care of in this episode.
  • Amelia is also sympathetic to Owen’s mother in this episode as she tries to lessen the tension in the room as Owen butts head with his mom’s new boyfriend.
  • Amelia is compassionate in this episode as she takes time to deal with Owens’s mother, so she can get a CT scan and hopefully make things easier for Owen’s relationship with his mother.
    • Body lunge & Dress:
      • Amelia is more feminine based on how she is seen in this episode as she is seen smiling and her makeup is not out of place.

Masculine

  • Amelia is ambitious in this episode as she tries to help out her new love interest even though he told her to back out of it. She wants to do the best for the people she cares about even if that means going against what they say sometimes.
  • Amelia is assertive as she sets Owen straight after he yells at her.
  • She stands up for herself by being self-reliant as she tells Owen the mistakes he made, along with the fact that he was out of line when he spoke with her.
    • Body lunge & Dress:
      • Whenever Amelia is shown in the episode, she always has good posture showing that she has power and is not seen as someone who should be messed with. Even when she is fighting with Owen, she stands tall and asserts her dominance.
