Amelia Bechdel Test: Passes 

This episode passes as Amelia has an interaction with Arizona and Jo who are female coworkers and they talk about the female patient that they are working on. The other interactions Amelia with her boss Owen, and then through her second case that is connected to the first. Based on Amelia’s body language and actions in this episode she is seen as more masculine. Even though Amelia was understanding, sensitive to others’ needs, and had a feminine touch which are signs of feminine traits they’re are overcome with her masculine traits which were assertiveness, being analytical, and strong posture that is seen in this episode.

 Sex Role Analysis

 Feminine 

  • Amelia is understanding as she has to make Arizona see that her patient is dead and cannot be revived even though it takes Arizona awhile to process this.
  • Amelia is sensitive to others’ needs as even though she knows she could give the patient a better life since the patient said no, she knows that she has to respect his wishes even if it means a worse outcome for him.
    • · Body lunge & Dress: 
      • Amelia is more feminine based on how in each shot no matter where it is her makeup is perfect and not a single hair is out of place.

Masculine

  • Amelia is assertive in this episode as she takes charge when her patient is seizing, she takes a minute to analyze what’s the best thing to do as her patient is putting up which causes a roadblock in how she would normally do her treatment.
  • Amelia is analytical as she quickly switches over to help the baby survive after her patient dies. By doing this she switches her emotions to focus on the life of the unborn child instead of grieving at that moment for the loss of the patient.
  • Amelia acts as the leader, as she shares her discovery of her second patient with the rest of the doctors on the case.

      • Whenever Amelia is shown in the episode, she always has good posture showing that she has power.
