Amelia Bechdel Test: Pass 

This episode passes since Amelia talks to Dr. Herman as she is the specialist that is working on her tumor. The other interactions that Amelia has are focused on the group’s bigger problem with one of her coworker pregnancy problems. The last scene of this episode is Amelia’s interaction with her boss Owen, where she is open with him as she reveals a part of her past to him. Overall in this episode, Amelia is portrayed more as masculine based on her Body language and her actual language, as she is seen being dominant, forceful, assertive, and almost always stand strong and raises her voice.

Sex Role Analysis

Feminine 

  • In the opening scene, Amelia is seen as being sympathetic and sensitive to others’ needs as she lights a candle and says a prayer for her coworker who is in pain. Being sympathetic and sensitive to other’s needs is seen as a feminine trait. 
    • This is shown again when she tells the others to let the couple grieve instead of giving them sympathy gifts.
  • Amelia is understanding of the pain her coworker is experiencing as she opens up to her boss that her child only lived for 43 minutes. Being open and understanding is seen as a feminine trait.

Masculine

  • This episode starts with Amelia in the hospital church, she shows force when talking to a nurse that has fallen asleep in one of the pews. She kicks the pew to wake up the nurse, she uses force which is seen as a masculine trait. 
  • Amelia acts like a leader as she teachers an intern what her plan is with another patient.  
  • Amelia’s strong personality comes through in this episode as she gives some tough love to her intern, which is seen as a masculine trait.
  • She is dominant when she continues to work on the patient as she tries to beat the odds and give him his sight back. Being dominant is seen as a masculine trait.
  • She is assertive as she reminds her intern not to get her hopes up after the surgery is done, they have a small alteration after the patient gets a small part of his sight back. She raises her voice during the altercation, which she uses to get her point across.
