Amelia Bechdel Test: Passes
This episode passes since Amelia’s first conversation with anyone in this episode is with doctor Herman who is a female and a regular on season 11, and they are talking about doctor Herman’s tumor. This episode had a lot of feminine and masculine traits for Amelia Shepherd, however, this episode portrayed her as more masculine as she was assertive, kept power, and took a risk which is masculine traits.
Sex Role Analysis
Feminine
- Amelia is seen in the first minute being gentle with the patient as she gently puts the blanket over her and gives her a reassuring smile making. This is seen as feminine as she is being warm to the patient letting her know that everything will be okay.
- Amelia is seen as more cheerful when she finds her female coworkers in the lab as she sits down chats with them, being cheerful is seen more as a feminine trait.
- She is also seen as sympathetic and understanding as she relates to her sister and female coworkers that she understands the feeling of love along with reminding them that it’s okay to feel these feelings. Sympathetic and understanding are seen as feminine traits.
Masculine
- Amelia is assertive when she is talking to her patient as she states confidently that she will be able to get the tumor out; assertiveness is usually seen as a masculine trait.
- When Amelia is first talking to her patient, she has perfect posture and always keeps eye contact which is usually seen as a masculine trait as it shows the person has power.
- The third time Amelia is seen, she is going through her plan being assertive and dominant as she is teaching the interns. Being assertive and dominant are seen as masculine traits.
- Amelia is taking a risk by doing this surgery what the remove the tumor as many other doctors said it was not operable, she willing to take risks is more seen as a masculine trait.
