Season 2 Episode 1
Summary:
Ilana and Abbi spend the day trying to solve their air conditioning problems. A heat wave hit NYC and they don’t have an AC unit.
Masculine Traits:
- Masculine: Abbi has a date over to cook dinner, but while the oven is on, the air gets even hotter. She is visually uncomfortable and goes to the bathroom to wipe off her excessive sweat and uses the hairdryer to help. In the media, women are typically not seen sweating or looking ‘poor’. This scene resists feminine stereotypes.
- Athletic: Another attempt at getting an AC unit leads the girls to load up a whole UHAUL truck in exchange for a free until. They demonstrate their strength and independence as the man waits for the truck to be filled.
- Dominant: They go to Ilana’s old dorm room and pretend to be RA’s and confront the boys living there. They assert their dominance after finding contraband and in exchange of ‘not reporting them’ they take the AC unit.
Feminine Traits:
- Cheerful: Abbi has a big love for Bed Bath and Beyond, and she decides to go to look for an AC unit. She knows where everything is in the store and prances around. A few employees see her where they proceed to catch up and do their secret handshakes. Her passion for the store is similar to other women and certain retail stores. By using the sex role persepctive, we can analyze this and relize that men do not show passion for retail in the media.
Other Notes:
- They go into a clothing store. Rather than a standard montage, it is highlighted that Abbi is squeezing into her jeans. This rejects typical feminine stereotypes when women go shopping.
