During the second episode of The Office, we are greeted with a man known as Mr. Brown. He has come into the office for some diversity training after an incident that Michael had after a failed comedy routine. This episode focuses more on inequality of race. Alas there is still an example of how sex roles are still in play here. Michael is hosting his own Diversity day after he thinks the first one was not sufficient. He has his employees take cards with different races and put them on their forehead, they then have to ask questions to try and guess what race they are. There is one female employee missing from this group because she had a customer meeting. When she walks into the conference room, she sees what is going on. Michael sees her and immediately bombards her with racist comments towards her race (Indian). He acts like he owns a convenience store and he is acting like what he believes to be an Indian directly to Kelly’s face. Getting so distraught, Kelly slaps him in the face. Rightfully so.
This example is one that touches on two major issues in the world, race and gender. He is insulting an entire race, as well as offending one of his female employees because he thinks that it is funny.
