In season 3, episode 2 of Lucifer, the show opens up with a scene detailing Lucifer trying to hook up with an unnamed woman; in the midst of things, his angel wings pop out of nowhere and surprise the girl. Cue an interesting conversation and then Lucifer kicks her out, intent on cutting his wings off. In fact, Lucifer is in the habit of cutting his wings off daily; unfortunately, they always grow back and his feelings of emasculation continue to rise. Linda, Lucifer’s therapist, considers this an act of self-mutilation, to which Lucifer laughs. I think his insecurities are showing in his daily ritual of cutting off his wings – he’s afraid others will become of his deep insecurities. It seems like Lucifer puts on a happy face to show everyone he is fine and the same old guy he’s always been but deep down, he is struggling with hateful feelings about hisself and the wings that came out of nowhere. This can be tied to the sex role perspective in that Lucifer is doing his best to hold onto his masculinity, but it is slowly running out. He can’t accept the fact that the wings make him less masculine so he fights for his manhood and confidence. The episode sees Lucifer tossing his cut off wings into garbage bags every so often; it seems Lucifer belives in the saying “out of sight, out of mind.” I think that this is symbolic of his “face,” and how he wishes to hide the real him behind this.
