Some of them write for us regularly, some no more than one time – but I hope there will be more chances to work with them. I’ve been adding to the list through my 12 years at the magazine. And now, for the first time, the list is experiencing a loss. Gerry Diaz ’04 died last month – suddenly, and at the age of only 35.

I’m looking at the list and asking myself, am I supposed to cross out this name? He began his professional career, for heaven’s sake, as an intern in our office.

Today I’ve been working at another list: the list of Alumni Notes for our next issue. All human life is there: the births, the marriages, the deaths, the promotions … . Well, maybe only some of human life. And there is Gerry among the obits. I’ve pulled him out, eulogized him just a little. There’ll be a photo, I hope from one of the pieces he did for us. It’s the one that ran in our Fall 2009 issue, where he wrote about his journey from sharing his VMC dorm with the Packers during training camp to being all grown-up and writing about them for NFL.com.

The little notice reads:

We mourn the untimely loss of our contributing writer Gerrard Diaz ’04, who died suddenly on Jan. 10, 2015. He was 35.

In addition to his passion for writing, Gerry was known for his love of music, film and politics. As an undergraduate, he was a member of BIG; he graduated with a degree in communications and political science. We first knew Gerry when he interned in our office and, as he continued the relationship into professional life, he made us all proud.

He began his career at the Green Bay Press Gazette. More recently, he was sports editor at the Shawano Leader. His compelling sports writing fueled, too, his coverage of the Packers for NFL.com and CBS Sports. He also contributed to the National Geographic series “My Life is a Zoo.” Gerry was the consummate professional, 100 percent reliable and a notably fine writer. We will miss him so much; the magazine is the poorer for his loss, and so are we.

Gerry, who lived in Green Bay, was laid to rest after services held on campus. He is survived by his mother, Kim, and girlfriend Kelsey Kubale ’11.

It was Kelsey who reminded me of the Packers article. It was her own favorite.

I did not expect that the first obit I wrote about one of those on the list would be about one of our younger writers. I won’t be crossing out his name: It stays.

I keep a well-thumbed list of alumni writers, faculty writers and, above all, of the faithful band of contributors on whom we call regularly to write for the magazine.
