These pages must be among the oldest objects\u00a0&#8211; give or take a few fossils \u2013 in the college&#8217;s holdings. <a href=\"https:\/\/sncmagazine.knight.domains\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/IMG_5009.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-2305\" src=\"https:\/\/sncmagazine.knight.domains\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/IMG_5009-207x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"207\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This vellum page (right) from a Vulgate Bible is the earliest in the collection. It dates from 1230, and for me the most evocative marks on the page are the gridlines that must have been carefully drawn in the scriptorium to guide the artist&#8217;s hand (detail below).<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve been told the college purchased these pages from an itinerant pedlar who saw no shame in separating leaves from their parent volumes.
