These lyrics represent the Sex-Role Theory because they discuss relationships and breakups, and the stereotypical actions men and women do during a breakup.

Masculine Stereotypes:

You could’ve stayed with the guys, acting like you didn’t see me

Within these lyrics, one can assume that when men are going through a break up they choose to hang out with their friends and ignore the situation because that is how they cope with their emotions. Because they feel the need to be strong and not show weakness.

It would’ve hurt a little less if you’d bought some girl a drink / But you had to walk up, messing me up

Men typically will move on faster than the girl and they will do so by distracting themselves by talking to other women. However, in these lyrics, he went back to his ex and is talking to her which is counterstereotypical.

Feminine Stereotypes:

I don’t scroll through the past anymore ’cause I don’t care

This line signifies that women tend to reminisce on the past and they will overthink things and situations. They do so by looking at photos and videos, and it may take them a while to delete them or forget the past.

I’m finally putting on the shirt I like / Tight jeans, big hoops with my hair up high

The stereotypes found within these lyrics signify that after a breakup, women tend to take a bit until they find themselves again, and then they better themselves and dress up for themselves, not for others. Because they want to feel good and be confident which can happen with the clothes they put on to make them feel strong.

You must’ve heard I was moving on… / A quarter past two, I’m all about you / When I was just about, just about over you… / I thought that I was moving on, but now I’m starting back over again

These lyrics emphasize how hard it is to move on after a break up especially when you see that person consistently. These lyrics show that the girl gave in to the guy and is talking to them again even when they shouldn’t be. This shows the women are “weak.” and are willing to work on the relationship and communicate more.

Throughout the song “Just About Over You” by Priscilla Block, there are many feminine and masculine stereotypes that can be identified within the lyrics.
