While analyzing with the Sex Role Perspective, I will utilize the items for evaluating masculinity and femininity as presented by Hyde (1995, p. 134), and these specific items will be <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">italicized<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. In this post, I will be discussing the music video for \u201cGenda Phool\u201d by Badshah.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Link to video: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=SD4Z8dlZPd8\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Badshah &#8211; Genda Phool | JacquelineFernandez | Payal Dev | Official Music Video 2020<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>Evaluating Masculinity<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Reinforcing stereotypes<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The male rapper shows the stereotypical traits of being <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">dominant, forceful,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and having a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">strong personality<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, as seen in the way he carries himself and makes eye contact with others often throughout the video.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In one scene, the male rapper and female singer are sitting on a couch together, but the male rapper is positioned above his female counterpart. This further reinforces the stereotypically masculine trait of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">dominance<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Resisting stereotypes<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Many of the male background dancers wear outfits that are very colorful and do many of the same dance moves as the female background dancers. This ends up presenting some of these male background dancers as<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0cheerful <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">warm<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, stereotypically feminine traits.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Evaluating Femininity<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Reinforcing stereotypes<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Most of the women in the music video are shown wearing colorful saris and dancing happily, reinforcing stereotypes of being <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">cheerful<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">warm<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">At one point, the male rapper is about to say a swear word when the female singer covers his mouth. This very directly reinforces the feminine stereotype of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">not using harsh language<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Many of the female characters are dressed in outfits that show a lot of skin, which, when combined with many of the dance moves in the video, makes for some stereotypically objectifying scenes.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">At one point, the male rapper picks up the female singer and twirls her around, portraying the stereotypical feminine trait of being <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">childlike<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. In addition, the female singer\u2019s movements towards the male rapper, like touching him on the shoulder, tend to be <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">gentle<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">tender<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Resisting stereotypes<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The female singer is seen in several instances making direct eye contact with the camera and with the male rapper. This resists the feminine stereotype of being <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">shy<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and instead shows the masculine trait of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">assertiveness<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I am analyzing the most viewed Bollywood music videos on YouTube using the Sex Role Perspective.
