Our first group of women on the cover!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

After the events that occurred in September of the past year, the country was in shock and nervous about what would come next, especially with the recent orange alert and dance club bombings. The economy of the 90\u2019s appeared to be the only thing that had prospered through those events, until corporate fraud stories stormed the news. Companies looted by their own executives and other examples caused a public faith in corporations to drop. So began the year of the whistleblowers.<\/span><\/p>\n

Whistleblowe<\/b>r<\/b>: Person who tells the public or someone in authority about alleged dishonest or illegal activities.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Time magazine wrote: \u201cThese women were for the 12 months just ending what New York City firefighters were in 2001: heroes at the scene, anointed by circumstance. They were people who did right just by doing their jobs rightly–which means ferociously, with eyes open and with the bravery the rest of us always hope we have and may never know if we do. Their lives may not have been at stake, but Watkins, Rowley and Cooper put pretty much everything else on the line. Their jobs, their health, their privacy, their sanity–they risked all of them to bring us badly needed words of trouble inside crucial institutions […] For believing–really believing–that the truth is one thing that must not be moved off the books, and for stepping in to make sure that it wasn’t, they have been chosen by TIME as its <\/span>Persons<\/b> of the <\/span>Year<\/b> for <\/span>2002<\/b>.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

This statement seems to subtly say how these women were heroes, despite them being women. Even so, the article still includes the statement that \u201ctheir lives may not have been at stake\u201d making their actions less important. Same with \u201c<\/span>Who are these women? <\/b>For starters, they aren’t people looking to hog the limelight\u201d as if the only reason they would do their job is for fame.<\/span><\/p>\n

The cover does appear to show these women in a more intimidating way, arms crossed and eyes on the reader, contrary to what is commonly seen when women are shown in covers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
