Throughout the song, the girl seems to be more indecisive and hesitant, while the boys seem to be completely sure in what they want. This shows how it is seen as masculine to be assertive and make decisions easily. Women are seen to be soft-spoken, yielding, and passive. Men are supposed to know what they want and do anything to make it happen. They continually state that “It’s only you”, when talking about the girl. Again, in this song, they are trying to persuade the girl to be with them.

When the sun goes down I know that you and me and everything will be alright

And when the city’s sleeping

You and I can stay awake and keep on dreaming

The boys are stating in the above lyrics that they “know” everything will be alright. They continually phrase the words to show how they are strong-minded, decisive, and have leadership qualities. They are already making plans with the girl and saying that they “know” it’s her and only her, even though the girl is not sure. Overall, we can see the gender and sex roles placed on the “characters” within the song.

The second song I will be analyzing is “End of the Day” from One Direction’s Made in the A.M. album.
