Not sure if you saw this and I thought this would be a good thing to have linked in the comments of this post. Terry Green and Rebecca Hogue just discussed this post on a recent episode of the Gettin’ Air Podcast! https://voiced.ca/gettin-air/ Look for episode 72 just titled Rebecca Hogue.

You are becoming kinda famous!

In your three recent posts, you demonstrated a key principle that I try and articulate to all of my first year Education students, particularly those in my Ed Psych course:

“You own the learning!”

Often college students seem to think of education as “something being done to them.” It is true that higher education can be experienced in this way. Often the structures, and the professors themselves, encourage a relatively passive approach to learning. But the real value of college comes when student’s fully embrace the opportunity to learn.

College is not about “getting it done” or “making it through.” The college environment sets you free to experience and learn in an enriched setting.

To follow the color metaphor, you can stick with the literal, red and blue, or you can choose to create purple. But you have to “make the purple” by mixing red and blue. You have to experiment with different combinations to find the shade of purple that will work for you. You create that representation, not because I, or anyone else told you to, but because it is meaningful to you. Because it represents your learning.

By choosing to write these three blogs posts, you show us that you own your learning. The richness of what you shared reveals the depth your learning experience. Your our willingness to share it in your blog, adds value because it provides others with the opportunity to learn from your insights. As you can see from the other comments on this post, your voice has meaning for others.

You are free to learn whatever you want. What will you learn next?

Peace,
Dr. R

I learned a lot from what you have to say here about your experience with yor domain and especially how you included the visual for the Original and Current Blogs. Your post is encouraging! It also validates completely that it’s okay to see one’s site very much as a work in progress and not something that one checks off their list as “done” neatly.

In your “About My Job section” the way you’ve categorized your goals is a great model; I’m going to use this type of model to help me with my Instructional Design ePortfolio course that I’m taking with Rebecca Hogue in the U MASS Boston Instructional Design Program.

I saw this post tweeted out by Robin DeRosa. I’m an instructional designer for connected learning at Colgate University where we have “Colgate Domains” hosted by Reclaim. (I was sad to have missed the recent conference!). I really appreciated your reflection because here at Colgate, students have only interacted with “Domains” through course sites that belong to their professors. I’m beginning to think about how to roll-out Domains for students here so they can have their own accounts, and your reflection gave me some important insights into the value of Domains for students. So I just wanted to drop a quick thank you for giving me some ideas for how to pitch Domains to students.

Your points about asking for help and understanding the value of teaching others really resonated with me…I too have needed to learn to do both these things and understand myself as part of a continuous network of teaching and learning.

I also loved how the different cadences you experienced blogging enabled you to reflect on other practices in your work and life…that’s been such a valuable experience for me: to create, share and reflect in a cycle.

Thank you for sharing and I look forward to all the good things you will do next!
